Zimmer: Treadwell scratch vs. Lions about ‘matchups’

For the first time since the opening weeks of his career as a Minnesota Viking back in 2016, former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell was a healthy scratch. The Vikings instead went with undrafted free agent Chad Beebe.

“It came strictly on matchups,” head coach Mike Zimmer said. “Beebe had a good game against [the Lions] the first time we played them, so we thought we’d get some matchups situations there.”

Beebe made his debut on November 4 at US Bank Stadium against Detroit. He grabbed three passes for 21 yards, including a key fourth-down conversion. Beebe was not targeted in Sunday’s 27-9 win. He caught an 18-yard pass against the Bears in the following game, but suffered a hamstring injury that kept him out until this week.

Against Miami, Treadwell played a season-low 22 snaps and did not catch a pass. The Vikings elected to use more personnel packages featuring their No. 2 and No. 3 tight ends David Morgan and Tyler Conklin for more snaps than Treadwell. Veteran receiver Aldrick Robinson has also taken away a good chunk of his playing time.

During training camp, quarterback Kirk Cousins found some chemistry with Treadwell, giving a flicker of hope he could turn things around after a slow start to his career. However, the former Ole Miss star has just 34 catches for 295 yards this season.
