The Vikings’ decision to reward coach Mike Zimmer with a three-year contract extension last month meant it was likely only a matter of time before general manager Rick Spielman received a similar extension. The only question was when that would happen?

We have our answer. The team has finalized a multi-year extension with Spielman that is expected to run through the 2023 season. Spielman and Zimmer have worked under the same length of contract since the former hired the latter as Vikings coach in 2014. Spielman, like Zimmer, will work on the final season of his current deal before the extension begins.

“Rick has been outstanding in his role as Vikings general manager,” Vikings owner and president Mark Wilf said in a statement. “We are excited and honored to have him continue to lead our efforts to build a championship roster and first-class organization. With Rick’s and Coach Zimmer’s leadership in place, we are in a great position to continue to compete for a Super Bowl.

Spielman has been with the Vikings since 2006 when he was named vice president of player personnel. He was promoted to general manager in 2012 and has held that title since. The Vikings have been in the postseason four times since Spielman became GM, including three times under Zimmer. The Vikings went 13-3 and advanced to the NFC championship game in 2017. With Spielman at GM, the Vikings are ninth in the NFL with a .570 winning percentage (72-54-2), fourth-best in the NFC in that time.

Spielman has made more draft picks (93) than any other GM in the NFL since 2012, including having 15 picks this past April. That was a league record for a seven-round draft. Of those picks, 56 are the result of trades and 13 have been first-round selections.
